Making a Skin pack
A Skin pack is a folder of PNGs and a skin.json that you upload to give
the whole Village a new Skin. Anything you leave out comes from the built-in
Skin you base it on, so a pack can be a recolour, one new person or a whole
world. Any Player can upload one; see Skins.
1. Download a built-in Skin's art
Open the Skins page (the Skin menu's Manage Skins..., or the Village's
Skins place). Its starter links download a built-in Skin's folder from the
repository. Unzip it. The folder that holds skin.json is the pack.
2. Edit the PNGs
Edit them in any pixel editor at 1x, at the exact size of each file; the
art README
has the table. The layout is skin.json, ground/, path.png, water.png,
places/, decor/, ui/ (with -pressed copies), characters/01-50.png
(64x64) and faces/01-50.png (36x36). A pack may also add ground.png
(128x128) as the page background.
Every file is optional. Keep only what you changed. Transparent pixels stay
transparent, with no semi-transparent edges. Colours the page uses (text,
rings, links) are the tokens in skin.json; theme is light or dark, and pathEdge is the map's road edge colour.
Every colour is #rrggbb; capitals are fine.
A frame's fill is read from its centre pixel (6,6), so keep that pixel flat.
3. Keep text readable
Every text and surface pair must reach 4.5:1, and focus rings and control
borders 3:1, counting any frame fill you replace. The upload names every pair
that falls short, along with any file at the wrong size or path and any colour
or token name in skin.json it cannot use, all at once.
4. Upload the folder
On the Skins page, give the Skin a name, choose which built-in Skin it is
Based on, and pick the folder. The page finds skin.json and works from
there, so an unzipped download works as it is. Files that are not PNGs or
skin.json are listed as "Not uploaded". An empty folder, or a skin.json
with a JSON or type error, is reported before anything is sent. A colour that
is not #rrggbb, or a token name no Skin has, is listed with the other problems
after the upload. A pack is limited to 8 MB and 140 files, and a file to 64 KB.
Uploads are re-encoded from pixels, so nothing but the picture survives.
5. Wear it, hide it, or ask for it to go
Wear it from the Skin menu. Any Player may hide any Skin but Classic from their own list and show it again. Only the Operator can delete an uploaded Skin; anyone wearing it goes back to Farm.
